Emancipation Proclamation Pageant To Celebrate 154th Anniversary
of the Emancipation and the 150th Anniversary of the Decisive Defeat of the first phase of white supremacy
The Racial Justice Task Force invites all interested in history, anti-racism, and multiracial unity to attend the Emancipation Proclamation Pageant, which celebrates the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, on January 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln. The pageant will be performed on Sunday, January 8, 2016, between 11:45 a.m and 1:15 p.m. and on Saturday, January 14, 2017, between 7 and 8:30 p.m., in the Sanctuary at First Unitarian Church of Chicago, 5650 S. Woodlawn Ave., Chicago. The pageant also celebrates the 150th anniversaries of the 14th and 15th Amendments, which gave citizenship and the right to vote to the former slaves.
The Emancipation Proclamation Pageant, which consists of three Acts, is a combination of narration, dramatizations, music and interaction between the cast and the audience. The theme is the role which multi-racial unity played in abolishing the slave-labor system in this country. There is no charge to attend, but a free-will offering will be taken.
Director Finley C. Campbell states “At a time like ours when slavery is still a global reality, and the struggle to make all humans free based on fundamental human rights is still ongoing, it is important to remember this great event, the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, as a major stepping stone in the international, multiracial struggle against racism, oppression, and exploitation.”
