Hyde Park's Urban Renewal with Trish Morse

Wednesday, September 11, 12–1pm Central via Zoom

As some people in the Village remember, Hyde Park went through a radical transformation in the 1950s and 1960s, from urban density to low-density Mid-Century Modern. We'll take a quick look at the forces that shaped the decisions that were made, the university's role, and the grassroots efforts to shape the identity of the neighborhood that emerged.
OUR SPEAKER

Patricia (Trish) Morse is a Hyde Park blogger, historian and storyteller who is fascinated by the transformations in her neighborhood—Hyde Park, Chicago. She is known to many as Hyde Park Trish. Trish Morse has a PhD from the University of Chicago.
After teaching American Studies and Literature at Union College, St Lawrence University, and Michigan State University, she returned to Hyde Park, where she has served on the executive council of Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference, the Hyde Park Garden Fair, and the Hyde Park Used Book Sale. Trish authors a monthly history column in the Hyde Park Herald.

Chicago Hyde Park Village's free Zoom Drop-In series is held every 2nd Wednesday of the month. All are welcome! Invite a friend!

  • Can you get the flu shot at the same time?
  • What about those Covid tests stacked up in the closet? Are they still good?
Zoom into our ongoing Covid update series with Skyline Village friend, Dr. Michael Ison for answers to these and other questions. Please note Dr. Ison comes as our friend and former neighbor, not in his official capacity.

Share your feedback today on the National Plan on Aging draft report (download PDF) published by the Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee on Healthy Aging and Age-Friendly Communities (ICC). This report outlines a series of issues and principles to ensure older Americans can live with dignity, make their own choices, and participate fully in society. Unfortunately, the draft report fails to mention Villages —neither the national Village Movement nor any of the hundreds of individual Villages. Make your voices heard! The ICC is seeking feedback on the draft framework. Now is the time to weigh in on how Villages are using their expertise and capacity to meet some of the coming challenges as the population ages rapidly, when millions will need some help and most will not be able to afford costly home- or facility-based care.
