Honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day

Since 2005, millions of people worldwide honor International Holocaust Remembrance Day every January 27th in recognition of the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism. January 27 was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the date when the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated by the Soviet army in 1945.

The UN General Assembly encourages the development of Holocaust remembrance and education programs to help prevent future genocides. The Holocaust left universal implications and consequences in many parts of the world, leaving a collective responsibility for addressing the residual trauma. This responsibility entails educating future generations about the consequences and dynamics of crimes strengthened by ideologies of hatred.
