Chicago Area Villages Collaborative End-of-Life Series

Wednesday, October 15
4–5 via Zoom

Death can be a challenging topic to discuss. Many wonder why and how to prepare for it. In this presentation, you will hear about what a Death Doula is, why people benefit from the services provided, what a home funeral is, how to explore your legacy and the importance of preserving it. The work of a Death Doula is to assist individuals and families to prepare for end of life. Death Doulas have facilitated life-to-death transitions for both the dying and those left behind in all cultures since ancient times. The role of a Death Doula is to support and honor the wishes of a dying individual.

Services of a Death Doula include: Death Education, Consultation on All Aspects of Dying Except Medical, Funeral Arrangements (Traditional, Home, Green Burial), Referrals for Trusts and Wills, Advance Directive, Legacy, Caregiver Assistance, Sitting Vigil with the Dying Person, Obituary Drafting, Grief Counseling, Distribution of Possessions, Financial Inventory, Account Closures, Personal Inventory.

ASA Chicagoland Roundtable: Solo Aging: Challenges and Opportunities

Friday, October 10, 8:30–10:30am Central on Zoom
Provided by Rush University and American Society on Aging
Free; Register via Zoom

A growing number of older adults – about a quarter of baby boomers by 2034 – do not have children. Nearly 26 million Americans 50 or older already live alone, up from 15 million in 2000.  Coined “solo agers,” many older Americans do not have a life partner, children and/or family, by choice or by circumstance to provide support. How can aging services providers help?

Join us as we explore the challenges and resilience of those aging alone from a variety of perspectives and offer concrete resources and recommendations to help bridge the gaps. Also joining our expert panel will be a speaker with lived experience as a solo ager.

Speakers and Moderator:
• Claire Solomon Nisen, LMSW, MPH, Manager, Lasting Impressions for DOROT
• Grisel Rodriguez-Morales, LCSW, Senior Manager of Health Promotion Programs, Department of Social Work and Community Health at Rush University Medical Center
• Sharon Dornberg-Lee, LCSW, Clinical Director of Community Services, CJE SeniorLife
• Robin Tillotson, Chief Cultural Officer, This I Do For Me Podcast
• Moderated by: Serena Worthington, Senior Program Officer and Director of Equity & Inclusion, RRF Foundation for Aging
