BE THANKFUL THIS SEASON

Dear Friends,

The Thanksgiving season is upon us, a time to be thankful and grateful for the bounty in our lives. It is also a time of heightened loneliness for many people. Chicago Hyde Park Village is making a difference! CHPV, Augustana Lutheran Church, and the Hyde Park community come together on Thanksgiving Day for our 13th annual Community Thanksgiving Day Meal and to deliver Thanksgiving meals to dozens of older homebound neighbors who are unable to enjoy the community gathering in person. I'm thankful for the generosity of neighbors helping neighbors. Will you help us give thanks this holiday season?

Please help CHPV continue to nurture a caring and connected community where older adults can live independently, stay engaged, and thrive at home in the neighborhoods they love and donate today. With your donation, you’re making a difference in the lives of our neighbors.

“Thanks so much for the delicious Thanksgiving meal. And such generous portions. Enough for seconds and a delicious turkey sandwich. Thanks to the organizers, cooks, deliverers, girl scouts, and everyone else. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

“It makes a huge difference when CHPV drivers take me to my medical appointments as opposed to using Uber, Lyft, or a taxi.”
— CHPV member after a series of medical appointments

“I am so appreciative of the group and the wonderful exchange of ideas and information. Please know this group is doing the wonderful best things.”

Fraud & Scams Targeting Older Adults with Lynne Perryman
Tuesday, December 2
2–3pm via Zoom

Presented by the Chicago Area Village Collaborative and hosted by CHPV

Financial fraud targeting older adults has become so prevalent that it has been called the crime of the 21st century. Older adults are thought to have a significant amount of money sitting in their accounts, but it is not just wealthy older adults who are targeted. Low-income older adults are also at risk of financial abuse. Financial scams often go unreported or can be difficult to prosecute, so they are considered a low-risk crime. However, they are devastating to many older adults and can leave them in a very vulnerable position with no way to recoup their losses.

Lynne Perryman, Vice President and Control Manager at JPMorgan Chase, joins us to discuss this alarming topic and answers your burning questions. Learn how to recognize a financial scam or fraud, what to do and how to respond if you are targeted, and when and how to report scam or fraud.

IN THE COMMUNITY
Even though the federal government has reopened, many SNAP recipients may be feeling the pinch. Some individuals and families did not receive their full SNAP benefits this month. If you count on SNAP to buy food, we understand this is a difficult time. You are not alone – help is available.

Here's what you can do right now:
Check your benefits: Go to the Illinois ABE website or call 800-843-6154 to see what's happening with your case.
Get free food today: Call 211 or visit a local food pantry near you.

Coping with Challenging Situations in Dementia Care with Teepa Snow

Wednesday, November 19
12–1 Central via Zoom
Free; Registration Required

Presented by Renewal Memory Partners, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, and the Continuing Education Institute of Illinois. In the final session of our three-part webinar series, Coping With Challenging Situations in Dementia Care, Teepa Snow equips professional and family caregivers with practical tools to navigate complex behaviors and reduce distress. Using her “six pieces of the puzzle” framework, Teepa demonstrates how to assess contributing factors beyond the diagnosis and apply targeted verbal and physical techniques that foster safer, more productive interactions. These strategies are designed to support decision-making, improve outcomes, and strengthen caregiver relationships.
