This is your last chance to see Theaster Gates: Unto Thee, the artist's first solo museum exhibition in his hometown of Chicago, before it closes.

A self-designated “keeper of objects,” the artist Theaster Gates investigates the value of things and their potential to hold layered meanings. He has been dedicated to investing in the care of these objects as a way to nurture stories and voices – often Black stories and voices – largely overlooked by history or institutional structures.

IN THE COMMUNITY
DFA_logo.jpgWhat’s In and What’s Out in 2026:
Dementia Friendly America Edition

As we move into 2026, communities across the country are taking meaningful steps toward becoming more dementia friendly—and the shift is both powerful and practical. Here’s a look at what’s trending in (and what’s on its way out) as we strengthen support and understanding for people living with dementia and their care partners.

What’s In

Using person-centered language
➡️ Saying “person living with dementia” or “people with memory loss.”

Becoming a Dementia Friend
➡️ Learning simple, practical ways to support people living with dementia and taking everyday actions that help build dementia-friendly communities.

Community engagement
➡️ Memory Cafes, dementia choirs, dementia-friendly museum tours and theaters.

Recognizing dementia as a multigenerational issue
➡️ Understanding that dementia affects every generation—from children and teenagers to working-age adults and older adults—and that everyone has a role in fostering dementia-friendly communities.

Creating dementia-friendly environments
➡️ Clear signage, good lighting, quiet areas and trained staff.

Patience and understanding
➡️ Allowing extra time, reducing pressure and offering calm reassurance.

Promoting brain health and early detection
➡️ Encouraging screenings, social connection, physical activity and healthy habits.

What’s Out

Stigmatizing language
⛔ Words like “demented,” “senile” or defining someone solely by their diagnosis.

Overstimulating environments
⛔ Busy patterns, poor lighting and overwhelming noise.

Rushing, correcting or dismissing
⛔ “I just told you that.”
⛔ “You’re wrong.”
⛔ “Calm down.”

Assuming inability
⛔ Jumping in to do tasks a person can still do with support.

Fear-based messaging
⛔ Framing dementia only as decline rather than including capability and personhood.

One-size-fits-all approaches
⛔ Ignoring dementia experiences and needs.

Confusing communication
⛔ Small print, jargon-heavy language or unclear instructions.

Celebrating Lunar New Year!
February 17, 2026

This month billions of people around the globe celebrate Lunar New Year. February 17th begins the Year of the Horse, specifically the Fire Horse. Also commonly referred to as Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year is celebrated among several East and Southeast Asian cultures. Each culture celebrates differently with various traditions mainly focusing on reunion and prosperity. Unlike the Gregorian calendar's New Year celebration which is held on a single day, Lunar New Year spans multiple days, beginning on the second new moon after the winter solstice and concluding with the Lantern Festival on the following full moon. Each day of the celebration holds special significance that varies based on traditions and region.
